Roanoke police say a woman was pulled from the Roanoke River after she jumped off a bridge.

Police say the woman leaped from the Walnut Avenue bridge just after 10 tonight.
Firefighters managed to find her and get her out of the water a few minutes after they arrived.
The woman was taken to the hospital.
No word yet on her condition.

The company and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers signed a tentative agreement late this afternoon.
The new contract includes a 15 percent raise over the next five years as well as better early retirement and health care benefits.
The 37-hundred striking workers will return to their jobs over the next few days.
They'll also have to ratify the contract.

The airline says just one of the 204 cities it services will lose service.

The airline says one of its U-S Airways Express carriers has decided to drop its run between Saginaw and Pittsburgh.
Otherwise, U-S Airways says its restructuring plan will allow for continued service to its 203 other cities.

A judge has ordered psychiatric treatment for a teenage boy convicted of setting Roanoke County's massive tire fire.
But the boy's attorney says he'll appeal.

In June, the 15-year-old was found guilty of setting the brush fires that spread to Willie Keeling's illegal tire dump, burning millions of tires.
The judge sentenced the boy to a live-in rehabilitation program that includes school and counseling.

His attorney says the boy wants a new trial because his confession was forced.
He has 10 days to appeal.

City officials were notified by the U-S Postal Service that this postal contract station will be closed September 14th because it's not making money.
The location was opened in 19-99 after a new full service postal facility opened on the West end of town.
Mayor Tom Starnes says the city was told that a downtown office would be maintained.
He says its vital to area businesses because it draws customers to the area.
A petition supporting the idea is at the contract station.

A federal judge has rejected a request by a Virginia group to stop the University of North Carolina from requiring freshmen to read a book about the Koran.

The judge in Greensboro today refused to grant a temporary restraining order.
School officials said they assigned the book to help students understand Islam after the September 11th terrorist attacks.
But the Family Policy Center, a conservative Christian group based near Lynchburg, and three unidentified freshmen say the school infringed on students' religious freedom by making it part of the required reading curriculum.
Some students don't seem to mind the work.

Authorities aren't sure which driver may have been at fault.

Flood waters in Dresden's historic district rose to the highest they've been in a century today.
The Elbe (EHL'-buh) River swelled to nearly 27 feet threatening the city's famous opera house and art collections.
And over a hundred intensive care patients were evacuated to safe facilities.
About 80- miles northwest of Dresden a dam broke forcing 16- thousand residents to evacuate.
However, they were later able to return home as the waters began to ebb.
So far flooding has killed at least 100 people across Europe.
