Authorities say alcohol was a factor in a single vehicle accident that killed a 14- year old Franklin County girl. It happened around 9 o-clock last night on Hatchett Road. State Police say 40- year old Velda Mewcomb Hudson of Penhook ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, and the truck overturned. The driver's daughter, Amy Lucille Hudson, was ejected from the vehicle. She died from her injuries. The mother is being treated for minor injuries. Charges are pending.

Police say a Ford Explorer driven by 31-year-old Josie Reed was headed north on Route 6-08 when she collided with another car nearly head-on.

Three juveniles in the Honda were injured.. it took rescue crews more than a half hour to extricate one passenger from the car.
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Reed also suffered minor injuries in the crash.. she will be charged with reckless driving.

A Henry County man is hospitalized after being shot during a robbery. Police say that three black males entered Jose Valderrama's Martinsville home Tuesday night demanding money and drugs from the occupants. Jose was NOT home at the time... so the robbers went next door to his brother Lucas' home with the same demands. The robbers searched both homes and took cash. They kept control over the occupants until Jose came home... and then demanded money and drugs from HIM. During the incident- Coleman Lawrence pulled up to the residence and Jose tried to flee... but the robbers forcibly removed both men. Jose Valderrama was shot once in the arm and stomach. Lawrence was also robbed... and the suspects fled the scene. In all... the robbers got away with ten- thousand-800 dollars from a total of seven people.

On Tuesday, the Cental Health District received word that a crow found near Campbell Avenue tested positive, and yesterday test results showed a bird found off of Route 24 in Appomattox was infected. Last week, an infected pigeon was found in the Hill City. So far, no people in Southwest Virginia have been reported infected.

Former Governor Doug Wilder is not seeing eye-to-eye with a state commission he chairs.

Yesterday, the commission studying government waste refused to adopt Wilder's recommendations, which included eliminating several state agencies and a Cabinet position.
The panel instead voted to provide Governor Mark Warner with general criteria for making his own cuts.
Wilder says the mandate of the Commission was to propose specific agency cuts.

Commonwealth's attorney Ed Meeks passed away at the hospital Tuesday night-- after becoming ill over the weekend. The 55- year old Meeks had served as Amherst's prosecutor since 1977. The family will receive visitors tonight at the Whitten Monelison Funeral home in Amherst. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning.

The city of Danville is also grieving. According to Scott Funeral home, Danville city councilman Charles Scott died yesterday while visiting Florida. The 49- year old Scott, who suffered from diabetes, was first elected to Danville city council in 1998. Scott was vice president of Wyatt Buick, a pilot and a former Chairman of the Danville Regional Airport Commission.

Shep Zedaker (Zed-uh-ker) is one of 20 volunteer firefighters from around the region...who traveled to Medford in Southern Oregon last month to help battle the fires.
Zedaker teaches a firefighting course at Virginia Tech and during his trip, he managed to brush up on his own skills and obtain a fire crew boss certification... something he says will help him in the classroom later on.

Campbell County authorities continue their search for the gunman in a fatal shooting near Lynch Station Tuesday night...

Around midnight, authorities say a masked gunman walked into this home on Dearing Ford Road and shot to death 26-year-old Tony O'Brien Stone.
Stone's two brothers, his mother and an infant child were also in the house at the time, but they were not injured.
Police would not discuss a motive, but say the shooting did "not" appear to be random.
Investigators are pursuing several leads but no arrest has been made.

The city of Roanoke continues to search for new sources of water.
By next week, a well in southeast Roanoke could be pumping a million gallons a day.
