Since Jennifer was reported missing on Thursday, you have probably heard a lot about the Amber Alert system being used to try to find the missing girl. While Roanoke and a few other localities in our area voluntarily participate in the program...that's not the case for the entire Commonwealth.

Last month, Attorney General Jerry Kilgore announced a push for legislation to expand the AMBER Alert program state-wide. The program is designed to provide a rapid response to abductions through several outlets - including the media's airing of information about the child as soon as it becomes available.

A Roanoke County woman was found shot to death in her home last night.
Police say the victim was Beverly Haygood of the 600 block of Tyler Road.
Her body has been taken to the medical examiner for an autospy.

The Henry County Sheriff's Office says it has received few promising leads from the public about Short's disappearance.

In just a few minutes, the Henry County Sheriffs Department will hold a briefing on the progress of its investigation into the disappearance of Jennifer Short, and the murder of her parents.

Joy, unfortunately no... Overnight, the Henry County Sheriffs Department wrapped up most of its work at the Short Family home in Oak Level, and shifted the base of operations to the county complex.
But solid leads remain in short supply... and so far today there is no indication that investigators are any closer to solving this case... or finding Jennifer Short.

As soon as it was confirmed that Jennifer Short was missing, an AMBER Alert was called - in order to have the media alert the public of the situation.

But what exactly is an AMBER Alert? Brent is talking with Roanoke City Police Spokesperson Shelly Alley this morning to find out more about this program.

That's right, Joy. Virginia is actually one of only 14 states that participate in the AMBER Alert - which is a program that takes quick action in attempts to find missing children.

Joy, Attorney General Jerry Kilgore is pushing for legislation to make this a state-wide program.. but like Shelly said, areas such as Roanoke and Bedford already have the plan in place.

In fact, Kilgore made that announcement last month in response to the recent rash of kidnappings nationwide.

In addition to the AMBER Alert, Kilgore also wants to implement the Code Adam Program that triggers an alert over a P-A system and immediately seals off exits to the building where the child is reported missing.

There are strict criteria to using the AMBER Alert and Code Adam. Both are only used when officials know that there is a serious situation and a child is in danger. The programs are not used for runaway situations.
