100- foot flames and billowing black smoke could be seen for miles.
In all, seven apartment buildings burned in the eight- alarm fire.
Now, many evacuated residents are calling a nearby high school home.
Officials say the fire is another blow to a local economy still weathering the dot-com bust.
No injures were reported.

The West Nile Virus has reached the New River Valley.... Officials say a dead blue jay found at the Eagle View Mobile Home park in Pulaski County tested positive for the virus.

In Utah, an 11- year- old girl is in critical condition after a man allegedly raped and beat in her backyard Sunday night.

Police are questioning the suspect, who they say is an acquaintance of the girl's father.

Meanwhile, the father of another missing Utah girl, Elizabeth Smart, says he's happy the alleged kidnapper has been caught.

(( For the past couple of weeks the Hokies have been forced to get their house in order. The condition of Grant Noel's knee seemed rather insignificant last week after 42 players and coaches were knocked flat by a virus that forced two practices to be completely cancelled. And then three of the senior leaders on the team received suspensions. Ronyell Whitaker for two games, Lamar Cobb and Terrell Parham one each. Add those losses to projected starter Eric Green's knee injury and subsequent surgery and it would appear that things have come unraveled in Blacksburg. ((nat sound clap 2015tc)) In fact it's quite the opposite - this large group of ladies who attended Beamer Women's camp is making sure the team literally stays tied tightly together in its mission this season with the help of Maroon and Orange shoetrings. A dead blue jay is Pulaski County has tested positive .. and that means the West Nile Virus has reached the New Rivery Valley. The bird was found in the Eagle View Mobile Home Park on Belspring Road.

This latest "West Nile find" is one of many in Virginia ... including eight birds in the Roanoke Valley ... but it's the first positive in the New River Health District. Cases have also been confirmed in Patrick County and the Lynchburg area. So far no human cases of West Nile have been reported in Virginia.

Arctic Cat, Incorporated is re-calling approximately 45- thousand of its all-terrain vehicles.
Consumer officials say a mechanical problem can cause them to overturn.
The company says it's received 73 reports of broken suspensions... and at least 10 reports of injuries.
