Al Groh knew his team had to have the opener to set the tone for the entire season.
This is no way to set the tone. The Rams' Cecil Sapp gets stuffed at the line of scrimmage and bounces away. Sapp finds daylight up the middle, and out-runs everybody to the end zone for a 72- yard score. Colorado State led 19- to- 7 at the half.
In the second half, Matt Schaub gets the offense in gear, buying some time.
He then hits Heath Miller in the end zone for the score and a 19-to-14 ballgame.
Two Alvin Pearman T-D runs in the 4th quarter gave Virginia a 29-22 cushion. But then Sapp answered just 30 seconds later with another scoring run, followed by two Rams field goals.
