Our long, dry summer is causing some trees to get their defensive mechanisms in gear .. and drop their leaves now, instead of waiting for colder weather. Experts say trees cut off water to leaves to use what little water they have more efficiently. On a related note, the dry weather has led some North Carolina burley-tobacco farmers near the Virginia line to start cutting, the first step in a harvesting process that normally doesn't begin for at least another month.
