Our long, hot summer is causing some trees to act early .. and drop their leaves now, instead of waiting for colder weather. Experts say it's a defense mechanism .. as trees cut off water to leaves to use what little water they have more efficiently. On a related note, the dry weather has led some North Carolina burley-tobacco farmers near the Virginia line to start cutting, the first step in a harvesting process that normally doesn't begin for at least another month.
