Discouraging news today for hundreds of workers at Salem's General Electric plant.

G-E announced today plans to cut approximately 200- jobs at its Salem plant.

Most of positions are manufacturing.
The company-- which delivers drive and control systems for the industrial market- is blaming tough economic times for the decision.
A spokesman says there has been a reduced demand for G-E's products and that more layoffs could come next year.
A Roanoke priest is on leave following allegations of sexual misconduct.
Father Randy Rule of St. Andrew's has been asked by Bishop Walter Sullivan to step down as pastor.

Church officials say they want to avoid trying the matter in the press.
What we do know is that the alleged victim is an adult male and that he is alleging one incident of sexual abuse that he says took place when he was a minor.

Father Randy Rule was placed on administrative leave yesterday evening after an alleged victim came forward accusing the 53-year-old pastor of past sexual misconduct.
Father Rule has served in Roanoke since 1993.
Diocese officials refused to disclose where or when the alleged abuse took place.

Officials are refusing to classify the case as sexual abuse until it is looked at by the new review board.

They did acknowledge that Bishop Sullivan has spoken with the priest.

Before today's allegations surfaced ... Father Rule was already getting ready to leave his post in Roanoke.
Officials with the Parish Office at St. Andrews say next weekend was to be his last at the church.
After nearly a decade there, Father Rule was taking on a new assignment in Richmond.
Officials say the transition plans were announced last May and have nothing to do with misconduct allegations.
Monsignor Thomas Phillips is scheduled to take over duties at St. Andrews.
He was set to start right after Labor Day.
Officials say it's unclear if he will start early or if the mass schedule at St. Andrews will be affected.
The reward is growing for information about the kidnapping of Jennifer Short and the murders of her parents.
Henry County's Board of Supervisors offered its help and prayers for the family today. They gave one thousand dollars to the effort, bringing the total reward to 13 thousand dollars.

Authorities have identified the remains of one missing girl in Oregon- 13-year old Miranda Gaddis.
They are working to identify a second body- It's believed it may that of 13-year old Ashley Pond who also vanished last winter.
Chris Lawrence is in Oregon where the investigation has brought hundreds of mourners to a makeshift shrine.

It was back to school for students in Roanoke County today, but for many, the new school year brings new surroundings.
Cheerleaders and members of the band welcomed students to the new Hidden Valley High School.
The 30-million dollar project came in "on time and under budget", but after a rush to prepare for opening day, students, teachers and administrators say they are ready to tackle their school work.

Mel Gibson is back on top of the weekend box office after a two week absence.
The movie, Signs, about a possible alien invasion earned nearly 14 and a-half million dollars
in its fourth weekend.
The espionage thriller (Triple X) ''X-X-X'' came in a close second, taking in 13-point-seven million. It was the top film the last two weekends.

The oldest living human may be 113 years old, but that's no comparison to the oldest Tortoise in Egypt-
Listen to this- a tortoise at a Cairo Zoo is celebrating what zoo officials say is the animals 361st birthday.
The 400 pound tortoise was a gift from Egypt's former ruler- Ismail Pasha- given to the zoo in 1891.
At that time the tortoise was said to be 250 years old.
The Giant tortoise species is known to live int he Glapagos Islands and on Cecil Island in the Indian ocean.
It feeds on fruits and vegetable.
