Police got the call around four this morning .. shots fired along Newbern Road.

They arrived to find the body of a dead woman in the front yard of 37-68 Newbern. The victim is identified as 24 year old Amanda Killen, and police say it appears she was shot. Pulaski investigators tell us Killen's husband Jerry is the person who called for help, but they are NOT describing him or anyone else as a suspect at this point.

A murder trial today in Campbell County may help solve a murder from four years ago.

48-year-old Elizabeth (Fair-a-NAH-chi) Farinacci is on trial for killing her husband last winter. Frank Farinacci was found shot to death in the couple's home on Candler's Mountain Road February 13th.
Prosecutor Neil Vener says Elizbeth Farinacci told a state trooper - she killed her husband to cover up her involvement in another murder- the killing in 1998 of Jeffery Quick in Nelson County.

Police say Elizabeth later killed Frank Faranacci because he was going to confess. The trial is expected to last at least two days.

Virginia now has three probable HUMAN cases of the West Nile Virus.
Health officials announced today that it appears two more people may have contracted the disease.
One case involves a 42 year old man from Hanover County. He remains hospitalized in stable condition. The other a 65 year old Fairfax County man, has already been released from the hospital.
West Nile is transferred to humans throught the bite of an infected mosquitos. That's why health officials say it's important to protect yourself from the insects.

The streets ran red yesterday in a normally sleepy Spanish town.

Yesterday was the annual tomatina festival. Some call it the world's biggest food fight as trucks filled with plum tomatos drive slowly through the town.
The crowd suses them to pelt one another.
The tomato tradition began in the 1940s but the circumstances around its exact origins are unclear. Some locals speak of a food fight between two local families that got out control, a tomato attack on musicians, or a spontaneous protest against an unpopular mayor.

This weekend the track will welcome the Rolex Sports Car Series to southside for what is the first major auto race at the track since its reopening. The track is in tiny Alton, Virginia just outside of Danville, but this weekend drivers from 13 different countries will be racing at the track. The inaugural VIR 500 will have practice all day this Friday, qualifying on Saturday and the race itself takes place Sunday at 12:15pm.
