A night of pre-game partying leads to dozens of arrests in downtown Blacksburg.
Good evening, I'm Teresa Hamilton.
Thousands of Virginia Tech and L-S-U fans lined the streets of Downtown Blacksburg last night and early this morning to celebrate today's game.
But for police, it was anything but a night on the town.
News 7's Richard Lesko was at the disturbance early this morning-- where some 100- police officers were called out.

What began as a night of revelry for football fans, quickly turned into a situation that police saw as a threat.
They were concerned about what might happen-- after an estimated two to three thousand people began celebrating at the corner of Main Street and College Avenue.
[SOT - 15:29:57]
[INQ=Once it gets started...]
((BRUCE BRADBERY/BLACKSBURG POLICE SPOKESMAN; ONCE IT GETS STARTED, YOU NEED TO MOVE IT. BECAUSE IF IT DOESN'T MOVE ITSELF, AND YOU DON'T MOVE IT, THEN IT'S GOING TO TURN INTO A VANDALISM INCIDENT, THEN A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE HURT REAL BAD. AND WE WERE FORTUNATE TONIGHT, WE ESCAPED WITH SOME MINIMAL SCRAPES AND BRUISES.))
[OUTQ=scrapes and bruises.]
Police say the mass started with chants from Virginia Tech and L-S-U fans, and then even more people joined in blocking the street and celebrating.
After the entire Blacksburg police department was called out, Virginia State police, Virginia Tech police and the Montgomery County Sheriff's office...all responded to help disperse the crowd.

About 20 people were arrested on charges ranging from disorderly conduct and public drunkeness, to felony assault on a police officer, but no major injuries, or vandalism was reported.

Some football fans believe the whole episode was blown out of proportion.
But Blacksburg's police chief says it needed to be done.

You may want to make a call before you hit the road this holiday weekend.
The number is 5-1-1.
It is a travel information service that offers news about everything from accidents on the Interstate to accommodations and attractions along the 81-corridor.
V-DOT launched the system this past winter but says so far very few motorists are using it.
(///// SOT /////)
[IN Q=I'm just trying to]
((JASON BOND/V-DOT SPOKESPERSON: I'M JUST TRYING TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF IT. WE SEE A LOT MORE USE OF IT AROUND HOLIDAYS AND AROUND PEAK TRAVEL TIMES SO WE KNOW PEOPLE ARE USING IT. BUT WE WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO USE IT ON A DAILY BASIS TO GET TRAFFIC INFORMATION. THIS ONE SYSTEM BRINGS TOGETHER ALL TYPES OF TRAFFIC INFORMATION AND NOT ONE SYSTEM OUT THERE DOES THAT.))
[SUPER=01-Jason Bond/VDOT Spokesperson]
[OUT Q=there does that]
The only numbers you need to dial are 5-1-1....the rest of the service operates on voice recognition.
In case you forget the number, there are signs along Interstate 81 reminding you of the new system.
You'll have plenty of company there on the roadways this holiday weekend.
Area law enforcement plans to call in additional patrols but in one community that will prove difficult.
The Jennifer Short abduction and the double homicide of her parents in Henry County has left the Sheriff's department with very little manpower.
Even so, the sheriff says they will have deputies out on the hot spots including D-U-I patrol.

[IN Q=We're still going to have]
((FRANK CASSELL/HENRY CO. SHERIFF: WE'RE STILL GOING TO HAVE EXTRA PEOPLE OUT THERE ON MONDAY THAT WAS ALWAYS ALLOTTED TO THAT SOME GRANT MONEY AND SOME COUNTY MONEY BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE AS MANY AS WE WOULD NORMALLY BUT NOT BECAUSE OF A LACK OF FUNDING. Deputies will also be busy this weekend investigating the abduction of Jennifer Short who has been missing now for more than two weeks.
Still to come on News 7 at 6, one locality plans for community support on the anniversary of September 11th...
and the City of Roanoke is hoping a hit to your wallet will change your parking habits downtown. We'll have more on that coming up, but first let's check in with Brent in the WeatherCenter.
If you're planning to stretch your time in a parking spot in Downtown Roanoke, you could find a heftier parking ticket on your windshield.
[VO-NAT - :24+]
An overtime parking violation will now cost 15 dollars, and blocking a fire hydrant will now draw a 38 dollar fine.
Downtown business owners have commented that parking violators were hurting their business because customers could not find parking spots.
The Roanoke Police Department conducted a survey of 10 Virginia cities, and found that the city's parking ticket fines were low, and may have contributed to parking violations.
In a matter of days-- the nation will mark the one year anniversary of September eleventh.
Henry County is preparing to remember those killed and wounded with what it calls "A day of Caring" at Martinsville high school.
Last week-- the board approved a resolution condemning the acts of September eleventh and supporting the efforts of president Bush and other military leaders in protecting our country.

and also, friends and family remember a civil rights and aviation pioneer. Stay with us, there's much more ahead on News 7 at 6.
One of the area's best known civil rights pioneers was remembered today in Lynchburg.
A memorial service was held in honor of Chauncey Spencer who passed away last week at the age of 95.
Spencer was the son of the famous poet Anne Spencer-- and made a name for himself as one of the nation's first black pilots.
In fact-- it was Spencer's flight from Chicago to Washington D-C in 1939 that convinced then-Senator Harry Truman to create a division of the Air Corps known as the Tuskegee Airmen.

Coming up in sports, the Hokies put together an impressive performance today in taming the LSU Tigers, we'll check in on the track too tough to tame at Darlington, and
visit the Domino's soccer classic in Salem where Roanoke entertained the defending national champs.
[TAPE#=SP-104 - TC15148]
There were a lot of questions surrounding the Virginia Tech football team following last week's opener against Arkansas State. Today the Hokies got more than a few answers.
Mike Stevens was in Blacksburg for today's contest with LSU which included a visit by Michael Vick and an overflow crowd at Lane Stadium. Mike,

To the track where Mother Nature just simply hasn't cooperated this weekend at Darlington, washing out Friday's qualifying, shortening yesterday's Busch race, and delaying the start of today's Mountain Dew Southern 500. In fact, the first 19 laps were run under the caution because of light showers. 300 laps are complete and Jeff Gordon is the race leader. We'll have some highlights and post race reaction at 11.

Manny Ramirez got the Sox started with this homerun to the deepest part of Jacobs Field. The two run shot was his 25th of the season and gave the Sox a 3-nothing lead.
Brian Daubach followed that up with another bomb to center. The Back to back jacks were enough for Tim Wakefield who pitched 7 strong innings for Boston as the Red Sox knock off the Indians 7 to 1.
