Investigators were hoping to compare them to hair found in the house.
The latest wrinkle in the investigation came yesterday, as officers tried to execute a search warrant to read the family's mail.
The Bassett post master refused to hand it over without a FEDERAL search warrant.

Investigators continue to interview the family's acquaintances, including Chris Thompson, the former employee who found the Short's bodies.
They also did several air and ground searches in Bassett.
Family members are working on raising a hefty reward for information in the case.
They're planning a candlelight vigil at Sissy's Flea Market next to the Short home on 220 North September 15th at 8 P-M.

There are some new leads in the case of the man found dead on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

[VO-NAT]

Roanoke County Police used the man's skull to reconstruct his facial features out of clay after. Because of sketches and the bust, police now have received at least 14 leads on missing men who resemble the victim.
[SUPER=03-Roanoke Co./May 5;]

Authorities say the investigation could take weeks, because police have to find dental records or fingerprints of the missing men. The body was found in May on the Poages Mill Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Meanwhile, police are looking into whether the body may be that of Howard Woolwine, a man who disappeared from a Martinsville adult-care facility in 1998, but they add Woolwine is just one of more than a dozen men who look similar to the artist's rendering.

A Blacksburg soldier has admitted to trespassing .... now his future with the military is uncertain. Authorities searched for Mikail Sharov twice before when he went AWOL from the Army... The first time he was found safe at the Roanoke Regional Airport.

Police in Washington call the find disturbing, but say none of the items inside the bunker are actually illegal.

[SUPER=03-Roanoke/August 2000]

They could only charge Sharov with trespassing.
Yesterday, he appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor count.
Sharov was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 45 days suspended and three-thousand dollars in fines and restitution for damage to the property.

But even after Sharov serves that sentence, he won't be out of trouble.
Police say they've contacted the army's AWOL Apprehension Unit.
They intend to pick him up after he's finished serving his time and send him back to Fort Bragg, North Carolina for a possible court martial.

Who would take over if Virginia's governor and top state officials were kiled in a terrorist attack?
(------------)

[SUPER=03-Richmond;]

That is just one of the issues addressed yesterday by the state's Secure Virginia panel.
Governor Mark Warner threw his support behind all 33 of the panel's new recommendations.
One recommendation is to amend Virginia's Constitution to extend the line of succession to the governorship.
Currently the line to succeed the governor is the lieutenant governor, attorney general and Speaker of the House of Delegates.

But, what should become of it has been an issue ever since.

Others, however, including the town's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, would like to see part of the land used for ballfields.
