There's a new use for southwest Virginia's old salt mines. They're about to turned into a natural gas storage depot. Officials say it'll be the only large-capacity natural gas storage center within 500 miles. Natural salt caverns in the mountains around Saltville gave the town its name. The project is a joint venture between subsidiaries of Duke Energy and the N-U-I corporation.
