Even U.S. Navy captains have a hard time explaining how he did it ..in a boat no bigger than 26 feet.
BRAGG: I HAVE NEVER RUN INTO ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. (NAT WAVES)
A storm broke his mast. Then his outboard motor and radio failed. And supplies ran out the second week. So Van Pham says he collected rainwater in a bucket and cooked seagulls on a makeshift grill. At one point he used a bat to bash sea turtles swimming near his boat. One he hauled up weighed 200 pounds. And Van Pham? He s 62 years old.
CAPT. TERRY BRAGG/U.S. NAVY: This takes unique skills and a certain perseverance to pull this off. Van Pham set sail in June from Long Beach, California. He was heading to Catalina Island for the day, about 26 miles away. The Navy found him 275 miles off the coast the coast of Costa Rica.
CAPT. TERRY BRAGG/U.S. NAVY: The McClosky came alongside and tried to hail him in Spanish. He said don t speak Spanish, I speak English. When they pulled him up, Van Pham had ten birds sitting on the bow spread, waiting for his next meal.
(ON THE PHONE: CMDR. GARY PARRIOTT/USS MCCLUSKY) He kept saying, Just fix my mast and give me a sail and I ll sail back
to Long Beach. Van Pham had lost some 40 pounds. But other than that, in pretty good shape. But Navy couldn t fix his boat, and had to sink it. The Sea Breeze being the home he lived on, Van Pham said he d miss it. Chris Lawrence CBS News Los Angeles. ))
