Yesterday-- a detention hearing was held for 66- year old Garrison "Gary" Bowman who was arrested in Canada on an UNrelated immigration violation.
During the hearing-- a judge ordered Bowman to remain in Canadian custody for another week.
The judge made his decision after immigration officials argued that Bowman was a flight risk and possible danger to the public because he was wanted for questioning in the murders of three people.

Meanwhile, authorities are making arrangements to return Jennifer Short's remains to her family so she can be buried.
Relatives have set a tentative date of Friday night for visitation and Saturday at 1 o-clock for her funeral service at the Martinsville Church of God.

Roanoke County police say the woman found dead at the Shenandoah Homes retirement center had been sexually assaulted.
And police are looking for evidence that may tie a man arrested that night to the crime.

Police say Helen Cadd was a night manager at the retirement center, and that she had a set of keys to the building.
The medical examiner has yet to determine how she died.
Police are holding a man from Chesapeake, Danny Ray Taylor, on a probation violation.
They've served him with a search warrant to collect hair and skin samples.

A Clifton Forge man is in custody for the murder of his "on- again, off- again "girlfriend.

29-year-old John Matthew Beverly, Junior was arraigned yesterday on a first degree murder charge.
He is accused in the death of 24-year old (SHAN-ah) Shanna Wright.

Wright's body was discovered Saturday in her Covington home after the suspects father contacted her family and suggested they check on her.
Wright's family describes the couple's relationship as abusive.
Their one- year old son is staying with relatives. The cause of death is unknown. An autopsy is expected to be completed today.

Canadian authorities have been reluctant to extradite individuals who could face the death penalty in the United States.

Dozens of Virginia Tech students face delays in re-entering the country because of post-September 11th border tightening.
More than 30 new undergraduates and about the same number of graduate students missed all or part of the fall semester because of delays processing re-entry visas.
The federal government has increased pressure on universities to keep immigration, State Department and law enforcement officials constantly up-to-date on all international students' status and whereabouts.

A local high school student is murdered just hours after his birthday.

Brandon Kyle Billings was a senior at Galax High School and played tackle for the school's football team.

He was found shot in his pickup truck Sunday afternoon on Rockhouse Lane just outside of town.
Authorities say it's an area where many teenagers go to hang out, and Billings who just turned 18 Saturday, may have been there celebrating his birthday.
But, so far they haven't been able to find any witnesses.

A Patrick County high school student is behind bars for making a bomb threat at school.
School officials say a note was found in a boys restroom just before noon yesterday.
The building was evacuated and Patrick County sheriff's deputies searched the premises with bomb-sniffing dogs. Nothing was found.
Police questioned students who were near the bathroom when the note was found. A student was arrested and charged after
questioning.
