(NARR:)

The King brothers ... Alex, all of thirteen ... and Derek, now fourteen .... were convicted in adult court as babyfaced killers.

But in a highly unusual reversal -- the same judge who could have put them behind bars for life -- has now overturned their convictions.

(SOT) (Judge Frank Bell - Florida Circuit Court)

"THERE IS NO QUESTION IN MY MIND THAT THEY DID NOT RECEIVE A FAIR TRIAL."

Terry King, the boys father, was bludgeoned with a baseball bat.

Prosecutor David Rimmer argued conflicting theories before two different juries -- asking them to convict two sets of defendants of the murder.

First Ricky Chavis, a convicted pedophile and friend of the King family.

And then the teenage brothers. Legal critics accused Rimmer of prosecutorial misconduct.

One jury found Chavis not guilty. That verdict was UN-sealed only AFTER a second jury agreed the brothers had killed their father.

Over time, the protestors included even the foreperson of the jury who convicted the boys.

(SOT) (Lynne Schwarz - Jury Foreperson)

"THE FACTS WEREN'T ALL THERE AND THE WHOLE THING WAS A TRAVESTY FROM THE BEGINNING."

Judge Frank Bell has agreed -- saying the brothers were denied due process.

(SOT) (Shannon Castro - Brothers' Aunt)

"WE'RE JUST HOPING FOR THE BEST NOW AND YOU'LL SEE THE BOYS ARE INNOCENT AND THEY'LL GET TO COME HOME."

The judge wants this case settled by the lawyers -- a case that from the beginning has been equally bizarre -- and sad.
