I was on the catwalk going up, and about halfway to the other guys who were trying to reach for me at the pad die. The blast just swept me off my feet and the next thing I knew I was in the water.
(NAT SHIP)

The USS Constellation is in the middle of training exercises before heading to the Middle East. And Harris was working on the flight deck for the first time Saturday. He was standing behind a jet when the pilot fired up the engine, and the force knocked him overboard. Two other sailors tried to grab him, but too late and he dropped nearly 70 feet into the ocean.
(HARRIS)

I just remember waking up in the water and seeing the Constellation moving away. It was pitch-black, the water a frigid 62 degrees. And it seemed that everything that could go wrong did. Harris helmet has a strip that glows in the dark, but it was knocked off in the fall. No one heard him blow his whistle. And a flare in Harris life vest didn't work
(HARRIS)

For a while I felt alone. But when I realized I wasn't alone, they were looking for me I didn't feel so alone anymore.

The fleet immediately launched search and rescue helicopters and inflatable boats. But no one could find him. Finally when the sun came up Sunday, Harris unleashed a dye pack that turned the water around him a fluorescent green. He was picked up by a helicopter and rushed to the hospital.
