We're learning more about an early morning shooting in Danville that involved a police officer and a Pittsylvania County man.

Danville Police say 25-year-old "Charles Jackson Lynch the Third" was shot twice by an off-duty officer-
It happened at the intersection of Piedmont Drive and Mt. Cross Road at around 2 a-m.
Lynch is in critical condition.
Officials say two *uniformed* officers in an UN-MARKED car stumbled upon a disturbance at the intersection just after ending their shift.
When they attempted to stop it - - officials allege Lynch tried to run an officer down and that's when the officer fired the shots into the car.
The officer's name is not being released. He's on administrative leave while State Police investigate.

The rebels who took over a Russian theater have apparently killed one of their hostages.
An official says the victim is a woman, who appeared to be in her 20s.
She was shot while trying to escape.

((As many as 50 gunmen stormed the theater yesterday, and it's not
known exactly when the woman was killed. But a Chechen rebel Web
site says the woman was shot before dawn after she tried to enter
the area where the hostages are being held.
The Qatar-based satellite T-V channel Al-Jazeera has broadcast
statements by some of the gunmen. One man is quoted as saying, ``We
are more keen on dying than you are keen on living.'' He says each
of them is willing to sacrifice himself ``for the sake of God and
the independence of Chechnya.''
Al-Jazeera did not explain how it obtained the video -- and it
was not clear if it had been taken in the theater or before the
raid began.

Outside the theater, family members have stood helpless. These men
offered to trade places with the women and children inside.
It was Wednesday night when Chechen rebels stormed the theater where a
popular musical was showing and took hundreds hostage. The rebels,
including these veiled women, made their demands via Al Jazera
television. They want Russian troops out of a wartorn Chechnya. They
say unless that happens they will shoot the hostages or blow up the
building.

after negotiations began.
But hundreds remain inside, including at least two Americans.

Jury selection is under way for the shoplifting trial of actress Winnona Ryder.

She could go to prison for three years if convicted.
