It's the second one this year. A shooting involving a Danville Police officer and a member of the public. Today's happened around 2 a-m at an intersection near the Piedmont Mall. The victim is hospitalized in critical condition while the officer is on administrative leave.

Danville Police say an altercation between two groups began in the parking lot of Highlander's Cafe. They left the location heading towards Route-29 and stopped at a red light at the intersection of Piedmont Drive and Mt Cross Road. At that point officials say people from both cars got out and began banging on each other's vehicles. Officials say two off-duty cops stumbled upon the situation having just finished their shift.

They were in uniforms but in an UN-marked car. Officials say when an officer tried to get control of the situation - - Lynch attempted to run him over and that's when shots were fired.
A captain says there may have been as many as three shots ... two hit Lynch.... One in his torso, the other in the shoulder.

The first test of a Virginia law making animal cruelty a felony today ended in two *misdemeanor* convictions.

19-year old Lee Newman was today found guilty on two charges of animal cruelty for having failed to feed or water his dogs for at least two weeks in July. One of the pitbulls died. Newman says he wasn't able to take the dogs to his new home when he moved but left 50-pounds of food and five gallons of water for each, hoping to tide them over until he could return for them. But, he says, circumstances intervened.

Workman, a West Point graduate, demonstrated how he says Bailey tried to choke him, then went for his gun.

The trial of a man accused of murdering a sheriff's deputy has been delayed.

Roy Inge Junior was supposed to go on trial November 4th for the murder of Pittsylvania County deputy Frankie Betterton.
But defense attorneys said they wouldn't be prepared because a mental evaluation is not yet complete.
The judge in the case agreed and set a new trial date of February Third.
Defense attornies still hope to move the trial out of Pittsylvania County, but the judge said he'll try to seat a jury before making that decision.

Beasley allowed Bowman to leave his mobile home on his property before he moved to Canada in August.
Investigators searched it three times, but so far have found nothing that links Bowman to the Shorts.
Bowman will have another detention hearing in the next few days before he faces a federal grand jury November 12th.

((After helping the Cardinals to their second straight win October sixth against the Carolina Panthers, Jones enjoyed part of his bye week in Charlottesville watching his at his alma mater defeat Clemson. And while Tiki Barber is probably still the most popular Cavalier in the NFL, Jones is quickly becoming as productive as his mentor. ((:)) The dividends were never more evident than in week two against Seattle. Jones rushed for a career high 173 yards and a touchdown. He had 112 rushes in 16 games last year. Thomas is just 21 carries off that total in only six games this season. ((:))
