Local leaders, police, animal control officers, veterinarians and supporters of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals today gathered on a muddy hillside in southeast Roanoke to break ground on the new 5-million dollar facility.
The two connected buildings will house the SPCA and Animal Control.
The 27-thousand square foot project is a partnership between the SPCA, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and the Town of Vinton.
Construction is expected to take about a year.
