The three-way fight to prosecute John Allen Muhammad and John Lee Malvo may go all the way to the White House.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]

Even as Maryland officials were questioning the pair, federal agents took them away to a supermax prison in Baltimore.
The New York Times portrays the transfer as "a power grab" that prematurely cut off the questioning and, perhaps, prevented authorities from getting a confession.
The newspaper says numerous investigators heard a federal prosecutor claim he had "orders from the Justice Department and the White House" to take Muhammad and Malvo into federal custody.
That same prosecutor today said those allegations are false and that the two were yielding no useful information.
This latest squabble highlights the already public competition among prosecutors.
