Garrison Bowman could be let out of jail today. He will be asking this morning in federal court for a release on bond.

He's being held as a material witness in the murders of Jennifer Short and her parents and has been called to appear before a federal grand jury on November 12th.
His friend John Beasley says he's certain Bowman will be cleared of any role in the crime ... but in the meantime he worries that his friend's life is being ruined.

Meanwhile, The Short family murder investigation headed back to Canada yesterday.
Detectives from Henry and Rockingham County took a private plane to Inuvik (in-OO-vik), Canada, to search Garrison Bowman's van for forensic evidence.

Members of the Clark Family Experience have won their latest court battle to declare bankruptcy. Yesterday, a Harrisonburg judge refused to dismiss their bankruptcy petition filed six months ago that is being challenged by their record company.

The six brothers were signed by Curb Records, but it took more than two years for their first album to reach stores.
The Clarks maintain they are broke... without adequate income to pay their debts.
The record company argued that the brothers were acting in bad faith... filing bankruptcy in an effort to get out of their record contract.

Because of yesterday's ruling, the Clarks' contracts will be rejected as a matter of law. An attorney for Curb Records says the company hasn't decided whether to appeal the judge's decision.

Arena football has lost its "steam" in Roanoke.
Civic Center officials say the team will not return for a 4th season.

The Roanoke Steam has struggled with finances and ticket sales in its three years on the field. Last May, the team's owners filed for bankruptcy - - putting the team's future in Roanoke into question. While the arena-2 football league took control of the team during efforts to find a new local owner ... those were unsuccessful. Civic Center officials say ticket sales for the Steam increased each year they played but that a strong fan base was never established.

A Craig County man is behind bars this morning- accused of shooting his wife and firing AT another man.

Kevin Medley was taken into custody around seven- thirty last night after agreeing to turn himself over to the sheriff along Route three-eleven. Authorities say Medley had been drinking when he shot his wife with a 12- gage shotgun around five o'clock-- The sheriff says Medley then left his house-- and later fired his gun at Larry Jones apparently out of jealousy.

The sheriff doesn't think Jones required medical attention. Medley's wife, meanwhile, was taken to Roanoke Memorial. The sheriff says her injuries are NOT life- threatening.

Henry County deputies are also investigating a shooting.
Officers responded to a trailer on Cabin Hill Drive early yesterday afternoon and found Chasity Lananda Dalton shot in the abdomen.
Dalton underwent surgery at Martinsville Memorial Hospital.
There's no word on her condition.
A shotgun was recovered at the scene.
Deputies later arrested 27 year old Karlos Phillip Allen of Ridgeway.
He's charged with aggravated malicious wounding and firearms violations.

Boones Mill wants the car tax back.
Last night, town council unanimously voted to ask Governor Mark Warner to reinstate the car tax and re-hire all the employees laid off due to budget cuts.
In its resolution, council said it's particulary concerned about the loss of the Rocky Mount D-M-V office, as well as the toll the budget cuts will take on education and economic growth.

Meanwhile, a new poll suggests that half of Virginians support Governor Warner's handling of the state's budget problems.
And according to the News 7- Mason-Dixon poll released yesterday, 58 percent believe the state is now "on the right track."

A majority gave Governor Warner a positive job performance rating.
54 percent of those who were surveyed said they believe that Warner is doing an excellent or good job.
The poll also gave high marks to Senator John Warner.
76 percent said they will vote for him on election day, and believe his job performance is either excellent or good.
Meanwhile, the two statewide bond referendums appear headed for passage.
57 percent of those polled said they would vote for the education bond issue.... and 53 percent said they would vote yes on the bond issue for parks and recreation.

A local high- tech company is under scrutiny by federal investigators...

I-T-T Industries says it's cooperating with federal officers at its facility on Plantation Road in Roanoke. The plant makes night vision products used for military and surveillance activity.
Company officials will not say exactly what the federal investigation involves. They say it may be linked to information they provided to the U-S government last year about a similar night vision supplier in the United Kingdom. The U-S Attorney's office in Roanoke says it cannot comment on the case.

Local leaders, police, animal control officers, veterinarians and supporters of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals gathered yesterday on a muddy hillside in southeast Roanoke to break ground on the new 5-million dollar facility. The two connected buildings will house the SPCA and Animal Control. The 27-thousand square foot project is a partnership between the SPCA, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Botetourt County and the Town of Vinton. Construction is expected to take about a year.
