[Take Leader 400] Here's a look at the final vote. Ben Cline captured 58 per cent of the vote .. winning everywhere in the district except Lexington, the home town of Democrat Mimi Elrod.

A statewide bond referendum was a big winner for Virginia voters. Virginians strongly approved millions of dollars to help state funded colleges and state parks.

More than 70 percent of the voters OK'd 900 million in bonds for improvements at state schools. [Take Leader 120]
And state parks will be getting more than 100 million dollars. The margin was a little lower than the education issue .. but still overwhelming.

Governor Mark Warner says he's excited that Virginians want to make an investment in higher education and state parks.

The bonds will raise almost one billion dollars to build new facilities on Virginia's college campuses and to improve state parks.
Warner was a major supporter of both bond issues.
But it was a mixed night for the Governor.
The transportation sales tax referendum he campaigned hard for in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads was defeated.

Rick Boucher claimed an easy victory in the 9th District for his 11th term in Washington.

[Take Leader 300] Republicans hoped Jay Katzen's move to Abingdon would unseat the Democrat, but Boucher held on easily... getting nearly two thirds of the votes.

Several ballot questions in area counties did not go over well with voters...

[Take Leader 640] In Lexington and Rockbridge County, voters said "No" to replacing the century-old courthouse with a new one.. just one block away. [Take Leader 650] And in Rockbridge County only .. a 10 million dollar bond to finance construction was also on the ballot.
But voters shot that one down as well. [Take Leader 630] And the residents of Patrick County spoke loud and clear. They want no part of borrowing 37 million dollars to build a new countymiddle school. 83 per cent .. or about 5 of every 6 voters .. voted "No".

Voters in northern and Tidewater Virginia shot down Governor Warner's push to raise sales taxes to finance more highway construction.

[Take Leader 500] In northern Virginia, the sales tax referendum went down 55 per cent to 45. [Take Leader 510] And in the Hampton Roads area, the "no" vote was even more emphatic .. with more than 60 per cent of the voters turning it down.
