Here's the reason why, a natural gas leak that took place just after noon here on the corner of US 221 and Graves Mill Road.

What happened next was hours of confusion and concern.
Authorities made the decision early on to evacuate everyone within a 1/2 mile radius including a nearby day care center.
More than a hundred kids had to relocate to the YMCA.

It looks like it will be noon tomorrow before natural gas is completely restored to the area.
Columbia Gas says crews will remain on the scene throughout the night to replace the damaged pipe.

In Pennsylvania- they have heat but scores of people are out of their homes tonight- after a fuel tanker overturned and exploded.

This was the scene earlier today in Connellsville, Pennsylvania.
The truck was carrying 77-hundred gallons of kerosene, diesel fuel and gasoline.
About 200 residents were ordered out- as workers clean the fuel out of nearby sewers.
The bad news- Fuel did get into a nearby river-
The good news- no drinking water was affected- Two treatment plants fed by the river are uphill from the spill.

The mummified bodies of a German family were discovered by a friend who was trying to find out why they had not paid their taxes. The 70- year- old woman was found covered with a blanket on the floor and her son was tucked in his bed with his dog.

The family's bills were on automatic payment from a checking account. A calendar in the house was marked until February 28th and groceries in the refrigerator had expiration dates of 1999.
The family used the Florida house for vacations so neighbors just thought they had returned to Germany. It appears mother, son and dog died peacefully, but the cause of death has yet to be determined.

They signed a plea agreement today promising to pick up trash along Craig Avenue by eight in the morning after a party. Residents had complained about parties and the trash left behind. 24 students were charged with misdemeanors for their failure to remove trash containers from the curb by seven A-M the day after garbage collection day. Under the deal accepted by a Circuit Court Judge today, the case against the students will be dropped at the end of the Fall semester, NEXT year, IF they stay out of trouble.

The Miami Hurricanes had won 31 straight games entering last night's contest with Pittsburgh. The Panthers came in having won 14 of their past 16 games including nine straight in the Big East. The winner would have the inside track to the conference title.

As if their first three game losing streak in a decade wasn't bad enough, the news for the Virginia Tech Hokies got worse yesterday afternoon. Five Tech players were hurt last night, and two Hokie Starters are apparently done for the season.

Jason Lallis dislocated his left shoulder in the first half. The sophomore has a slight chance of getting well in time for Tech's bowl game. Fellow tackle, Kevin Lewis, is still plagued by a torn pectoral muscle. He will decide if he wants to have surgery now, or try to play through the pain until season's end.

The Bridgewater College football team finished the regular season ranked second in the nation. The Eagles also got a first round bye in the NCAA division Three playoffs that open up this weekend.

Yesterday, the Eagles also cleaned up in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's post season awards. Mike Clark, was selected by his coaching peers in the ODAC as the conference's coach of the year. Clark proved that he could reload this season, taking the leftovers from last year's Stagg Bowl runner-up team and going 10-and-0. One of the big reasons for the success was the play of linebacker Jermaine Taylor, number 99, who is the ODAC player of the year. And one other note - senior safety Brad McCrady out of Northside, has been named to the Verizon all-academic college division team. McCrady is a biology major.
