For a while, two new boilers that were part of a 6-million dollar addition to the schools weren't working. Classes had to be canceled for a day and then today was the third time students were sent home early.

[SUPER=03-Craig Co.;]

This time, officials say the heating system is working, but heat is not circulating through the buildings correctly. In today's case, the elementary school was at a good temperature while several classrooms in the High School weren't getting any heat at all. Because of busing routes, all 7-hundred students in grades K through 12 were released at about 11:15. The problem was determined to be a controls part malfunction. A specialist was sent out to the scene today and it was fixed.

The city's new tobacco tax kicked in yesterday. The extra "fifteen cents a pack" will go help pay for improvements at Andrew Lewis Middle School. Some store owners have been concerned smokers will take their business to Roanoke County where the charter prevents the imposition of a cigarette tax. Salem will also use revenue from the doubled car decal fee, a new cell phone tax and an increase in the lodging tax to pay for improvements to the school.

In other health news, a small study suggests that men who do a lot of mountain biking may have lower sperm counts. A study in Austria looked at 55 men who rode mountain bikes an average of more two hours a day, six days a week. It found that nearly 90 per cent had low counts. A researcher says the study cannot fully determine whether this would reduce the chance of fathering a child.
