The aircraft carrier's five-thousand sailors and airmen are celebrating Christmas one day early, several hundred miles off the coast of Iraq.
The carrier arrived in the Persian Gulf earlier this month and its planes have been flying regular missions over the southern no-fly zone.
Plans call for that schedule to continue on Christmas Day.

A holiday tragedy for Ukraine--

All 46 people on board a Ukrainian aircraft were killed when the plane crashed into a mountain in Iran.
Some of the engineers who helped design it were among the casualties.
The Ukrainian designers and engineers, along with Russian aircraft officials were on their way to test a plane of the same model as the one that crashed.
Investigators have recovered the black box and believe pilot error was to blame for yesterday's accident.

A police foot pursuit slowed traffic on Route 220 in Roanoke.

Dispatchers say they got a call about a man running in and out of traffic near the Elm Avenue Exit.
Officers responded around eight o-clock last night and took a California man into custody.
One officer hurt his knee and was taken to the hospital.
The suspect wasn't hurt but he was also taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation.
No charges have been filed.
