When you need help, you expect law enforcement to be there.
But some area sheriff's believe meeting that need could become difficult.
Justin McLeod tells us why.

Cassell is talking about Governor Warner's recent decision not to cut any funds that pay for deputies.
But sheriff's departments still face a five percent budget cut for the next fiscal year.
[SOT 23:57:40]
[IN Q=What they're going]

[Runs= 08]
[OUT Q=of the inmates]

In Roanoke City, that means a loss of 192-thousand dollars in state aid for the next fiscal year.
Henry County will lose nearly two hundred thousand.
The Sheriff says there that could lead to lay-offs.

((JUSTIN McLEOD/REPORTING: THE BOTETOURT COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT HAS ALSO SEEN A CUT IN STATE FUNDS BUT SO FAR THEY'VE MADE NO CUTS IN PERSONNEL. THAT'S BECAUSE THE COUNTY HAS STEPPED IN AND MADE UP THE DIFFERENCE. BUT SHERIFF RONNIE SPRINKLE REALIZES THAT COUNTY HELP MAY BE COMING TO AN END.))
[Runs= 15]
[OUT Q=to and end]

((NAT SOUND IN ROANOKE CITY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT))
The Roanoke City Sheriff also fears the future.
Right now, the cost of housing federal inmates is helping to make up the difference in loss of state aid.
But Sheriff McMillan wonders how long that can last.
[SOT :57 TAPE 2]
[IN Q=If the General Assembly]

((GEORGE McMILLAN/ROANOKE CITY SHERIFF: IF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DOESN'T STARTING LOOKING FOR WAYS TO BRING IN MORE REVENUE, I'M NOT HERE TO TELL THEM HOW BUT IF THEY DON'T COME UP WITH MORE REVENUE THEY MAY END UP NEXT TIME OR NEXT YEAR OR 2005 CUTTING PERSONNEL.))
[Runs= 13]
[OUT Q=cutting personnel]

And for that reason, sheriff's departments across the state will have to fight for survival as they continue to fight crime.

37-year old Patty Jo Pulley disappeared in May of 1999 when she left her home to go shopping in Danville.
Two weeks ago, a passerby found her remains near a bridge in Caswell County North Carolina.
The Caswell County sheriff says investigators have talked to Pulley's husband, Rick.
Sheriff Mike Welch says he is not considered a suspect but he also said no one is being ruled out either.
The Sheriff declined to say whether any other family members have been interviewed.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are kings of the college football world for the seventh time. The Bucks forced 5 Miami turnovers, knocked Willis McGahee out of the Fiesta Bowl with torn knee ligaments, and battered Canes quarterback Ken Dorsey on their way to a 31-24 double overtime win.

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=03-Tempe, AZ/ABC Sports; :00]

Miami needed a late field goal just to force the extra time.
The Hurricanes scored first when Dorsey found tight end Kellen Winslow over the middle for a touchdown.
Then it was OSU's turn. And Jim Tressel's club got some help from the zebras on this questionable pass interference call that setup a score, forcing a second extra session.
Ohio State cashed in on its next opportunity when Maurice Clarett found the zone from just a couple yards out.
The Buckeyes defense then turned up the heat on Dorsey and Ohio State claims its first national title since 1968.
