A natural gas leak in Salem tonight--
The situation is going on right now in the Kessler Mill Road area.
Several people have called News 7 tonight saying they smelled natural gas and could hear a hissing sound.
Salem police told us just a few moments ago that the line has been shut off at this time.
No word yet if any people in that area are being evacuated.
Kessler Mill Road is closed for now.

Authorities are investigating a police chase that resulted in an accident injuring two people today in Roanoke.
The man who police say led them on a chase through Northwest Roanoke is in the city jail tonight.

The chase began at the corner of 21st Street and Moorman Avenue just after five o'clock.
It ended four blocks away at the intersection of 19th Street and Orange Avenue.
Officers say that is where the driver ran a red light and crashed into a Chrysler New Yorker.
This is the fifth police chase in Roanoke since last April that resulted in an accident.

Jean, the driver of the other vehicle has been identified as 67 year old Clifton Jones of Northwest Roanoke.
He is listed in fair condition at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Police say two Roanoke women died trying to beat a freight train through a crossing this morning.
Police say 61-year-old (Po-COM Com Thep-Sumong) Thokam Kham Thepsimoung and her 29-year-old daughter (Vat-SAHN-uh Tor Thep-Sumong) Vatsana Tor Thepsimoung were killed instantly.

The State Corporation Commission has approved a Roanoke Gas rate increase.
The two- point- three percent adjustment is less than the utility requested, but it will add an average of "one dollar and seven cents" a month to a residential bill.
The S-C-C also approved a program that's designed to protect the company and its customers from wide fluctuations in gas bills.

Two vehicles were heading west on Orange Avenue last night, a block and a half from the Roanoke Civic Center. One minute after eleven multiple shots were fired from a Dodge Neon into a Jeep Grand Cherokee, fatally wounding a front-seat passenger.

To dispel fears that it was merely a drive-by shooting, city police issued a statement, saying "We do not believe this was a random act of violence." Driver Anthony Lydell Matthews pulled into a gas station to get help. Rescue workers took 26-year old Antwone Lamont Preston to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where he died a short time later.

Federal Aviation officials are telling Air Midwest to check 45 planes serviced at its maintenance facility in West Virginia.

The doctors want to know their local lawmakers will support Wise's plan before deciding whether to end their nine-day-old walkout.
Last night Governor Bob Wise proposed transferring 20-million dollars in tobacco settlement funds to help doctors meet escalating malpractice insurance premiums.
The proposal also would cap damage awards and impose further limits on medical malpractice lawsuits.

Authorities say the natural gas leak in Salem is now under control.
Fire officials say the problem was caused by over-pressurization at the J-M Mason substation on Lakeside Circle.
Because of the wind, the gas could be smelled miles away.

No homes have been evacuated and Kessler Mill Road is now open.

The coach held a VIP kickoff party this past weekend for friends, coaches, and former players. Previously known as the Gobblertown Tavern, the restaurant has undergone a complete facelift over the past four months.

The menu will consist of steak, seafood, and chicken dishes. But the food will makeup only half of the Beamer's experience.
