There are now two private proposals to improve Interstate-81 before the Virginia Department of Transportation.
(------------)
[VO-NAT :18]
[SUPER=03-Roanoke;]

The latest from Fluor Virginia, a group of financial consultants and design build firms, looks to add a lane to each side of the highway as well as a toll system for BOTH cars and trucks. The project would cover 325 miles and cost one-point-eight-billion dollars with an estimated completion date of 2011.

The other plan to widen the highway comes from Star Solutions, another private consortium.
It re-submitted a proposal developed last year. It still calls for adding truck- only lanes, in which a toll would be collected, something that angered the trucking industry. V-Dot's deadline for all proposals is today.
Officials set a September target for completing the negotiations. We'll have much more on the plans tonight at 5 and 6.

Low temperatures in the New River Valley are making it hard for crews to remove packed snow on some primary and secondary roads.

It's part of the same probe that's led to arrests in the U-S and Britain, as well as the questioning of rock guitarist Pete Townshend.

At least 142 people were injured when one of the bulls went out of control and attacked a crowd of 100- thousand spectators.
The event dates back thousands of years, and is held as a thanksgiving ceremony for animals that have helped in farm activities all year round.
The object of the sport is risky, though.
Participants attempt to get a prize that's held in a cloth bag tied between the horns of the bulls.
Emotions, usually fueled by alcohol, run high during the races, and they sometimes result in major fights.
