Today, the nation honors Doctor Martin Luther King Day.
Last night more than a hundred Danville residents took to the streets to remember King.
They held a a candlelight vigil and protest.
Allegations of police brutality continue to ignite a fierce debate there.
As Justin McLeod tells us, some marchers feel the solution is for the city to appoint an African American police chief.

What you see here is a familar scene here in Danville these days, as the black community takes to the streets to protest.

One example they say is the Rennie Hunt case.
Back in May, officers shot and killed Hunt after he reportedly took his girlfriend hostage.
What officers thought was a knife turned out to be a screwdriver.
And although an investigation cleared the officers of any wrong doing many African Americans are still angry.

Some would also like to see the city appoint a citizen's advisory committee to investigate future cases involving African Americans and the Danville Police Department.
[IN Q=Chief Neal Morris]

Many in the black community say Morris' retirement is a perfect opportunity to appoint a African American police chief here in Danville.

It is a community judging by this march that is currently still divided.

Other communities also paused to remember Dr. King's many contributions.

The celebration of Dr. King's life is an annual event for the chapter.
But organizers hope to hold the get together at a larger facility next year.
Traffic is expected to be backed up at Virginia's D-M-V offices this week.
Many people remember what it was like November 30th, after offices were closed several days for Thanksgiving.
Well this time, they were closed Friday for Lee-Jackson Day, and they'll be closed today for the Martin Luther King holiday.
The offices are already closed Wednesdays to save money, so D-M-V officials predict Tuesday could be very, very busy.
They suggest coming in later in the week, or if possible, doing your business on-line.
British authorities have arrested seven people in a raid on a London mosque, the base of one of Britain's most outspoken Muslim clerics.
Today's arrests are linked to the recent discovery of the deadly poison ricin (RY-sihn).
Witnesses say 150 officers were involved in the raid on the
mosque and two neighboring houses in north London.
Some officers used ladders and battering rams.
It's the third raid this month in what police say is an
``ongoing'' terror investigation.
A police officer was stabbed to death during one of the earlier raids.
More meetings in Baghdad today between the U-N's top inspectors and Iraqi officials.
After yesterday's meeting, the chief nuclear inspector said progress is being made, but he also admitted that time is running out.
The weapons inspectors have a week before they report to the U-N security council.
Brush fires have ruined hundreds of homes, and have left at least four people dead in Australia's capital.
The fires are still burning, and officials fear the hot, windy conditions could lead to more destruction.
Residents spent today consoling each other, and taking stock of the damage to their property.
Meanwhile, public anger is also growing after officials admitted that
emergency services were overwhelmed by the blazes.
The government has ordered an inquiry.
The state legislature will consider a bill this week that would allow police to stop you for not wearing a seat belt.
Right now, you can be ticketed for not buckling up only if you are pulled over for something else.
Governor Warner backs efforts to toughen the law, arguing it would save lives, but many lawmakers from both parties think the bill amounts to too much government meddling in private lives.
The House of Delegates Transportation Committee is scheduled to vote on the bill Thursday.
In business news this morning, the markets are closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Holiday.
However, it was business as usual in Japan. The Nikkei lost 131 points.

Whether you're in a car, or anywhere else, it won't be long now before your cell phone could one day save your life.
Currently, when you make an emergency call on your cell phone, most 9-1-1 dispatchers can only track you to the nearest cell tower.
But newer technology will help pinpoint the exact location of certain cell phone users.
The City of Danville recently received the new mapping system and is currently getting it up and running.
(///// SOT /////)

((DOUG YOUNG/DANVILLE EMERGENCY SERVICES DIRECTOR: SO IF YOU CALL AND YOU'RE FROM OUT OF TOWN OR IF YOU GOING FOR EXAMPLE INTERSTATE 81 OR HIGHWAY 29 AND YOU'RE JUST NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA, A 9-1-1 DISPATCHER WILL BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THAT MAP AND TELL US EXACTLY WHERE YOU'RE AT.))

[OUT Q=where you're at]
Pittsylvania and Henry County already have the new mapping system.
The problem is most if not all cell phones currently do not have a G-P-S chip in order to use the technology.
The F-C-C has mandated that all cell phone providers have the chip in place for 95-percent of their customer base by 2005.
