The oldest and largest bank holding company headquartered in Virginia is being bought by a competitor. First Virginia Bank announced today it will be purchased by B-B and T.

but officials say it will be some time before knowing exactly if and what changes will be made. But merger news is already looking good for stockholders. With today's announcement First Virginia's stock is up 4-dollars 59-cents.

The deal between the two banks actually involves a stock swap of almost three-point-four-billion dollars. The merger, if approved by stockholders and regulatory guidelines, would combine two of the country's highest performing bank holding companies. BB&T's assets would be boosted to more than $91 billion and create the nation's 11th largest financial institution. That bank is headquartered in Winston Salem, North Carolina While First Virginia is BB&T's largest acquisition, officials cite a successful track record of larger merger integrations.

Firefighters still don't know what caused the double-wide mobile home at 621 Cardinal Place to go up in flames.
No children were inside... but two of the day care's pets were.
Firefighters were able to rescue one of two gerbils.

A Lynchburg man suspected in a gang-related shooting last fall will have to wait two more months for his trial... while prosecutors try to determine whether they have the right man.

21-year-old Mario Antwane Scott is charged with shooting a woman in the arm in front of her Pierce Street home September 23rd.
He was supposed to go on trial today, but the Commonwealth's Attorney says he's still waiting for D-N-A and ballistics test results.
The gun police believe was used in the crime was located just last week.
Prosecutor Cary Payne also says investigators have uncovered evidence that may indicate Scott is innocent.
A new trial date was set for March.

According to sources, McDuffie accepted a full scholarship to Clemson late last night. The six foot-four, 310 pound offensive and defensive tackle, who attended Hargrave Military Academy this year under coach Robert Prunty, is projected as an offensive lineman. He played offensive tackle this season and did not allow a sack. He runs a 4.9 40 yard dash.

But tonight's performance by the Shaolin (SH-OW lyn) Monks combines martial arts and religion.

TheY first became soldiers 15-hundred years ago when the wealth of their temples became too tempting to local thieves.
