Firefighters say a woman was home at the time and made it outside safely with her dog.
A cat was not so lucky.
Firefighters had to deal with downed powerlines, the cold and water problems.

The weather may have contributed to an accident that killed 3 people from our area.
It happened on Interstate 81 in Kingsport Tennessee.
Officers say a driver of a van lost control on a patch of snow and ice and while regaining control pulled into the path of a tractor trailer.
All four people in the van were ejected, none were wearing seatbelts.
The driver, Joyce Poff and passenger Joey Mendez, both of Shawsville, were killed. As was Brad Dickerson of Elliston.
Another passenger Travis Poff is being treated for injuries.

A team of three staffers cruises the city streets every afternoon Monday thru Friday.
Last year, they helped nearly a thousand people.

Roanoke Gas reports six or seven homes are without gas on Tillet Road near Grandin Court.
A spokesperson blames the problem on a lack of pressure and says it could be several hours before the gas is restored.
A similar problem also happened in Garden City tonight but gas was restored there a short time ago.

A landmark ruling today on the issue of special treatment for prison inmates on religious grounds. Roanoke's Senior U-S District Judge overturned a federal law that requires prison officials to provide Kosher meals, for example. It's the case of Ira Madison, an inmate at Bland. In a 28-page opinion, Judge James Turk says the law is UN-Constitutional because it fosters religion.
He says it places religious inmates in a position of privilege over non-believers in prison, creating what the judge concluded amounts to "two tiers of inmates." His ruling is subject to appeal.

Former Virginia Tech quarterback Jim Druckenmiller signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts yesterday.

Druckenmiler was the 26th overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1997 draft and he made one start for the Niners which resulted in a 15-12 win.
