The company wants to build the natural- gas fired plant next to the New River Trail State Park. A hearing examiner with the State Corporation Commission is concerned with Duke's plan to use an abandoned mine as a source of cooling water for the facility's gas turbines.

The plan is to hire five emergency medical technicians who will supplement the service the three local volunteer squads provide.
The funding is the key: for the first time residents will be charged for their ambulance ride to the hospital.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that a 19 seater plane that crashed in Charlotte earlier this month was carrying too much weight.
The crash killed 21 people.
Now the F-A-A is going to ask airlines to weight some passengers and bags.
The goal is to see whether current weight estimates are correct.
Airlines are allowed to estimate that a male passenger flying during winter weighs an average of 175 pounds including clothing and carry-ons.

Rosa Yopp was convicted of felony child neglect last month.
Her husband is already serving a year in prison.
In May, investigators found the Yopp's three-year-old daughter caged in the bottom of a bunk bed.

A new study says either may raise the risk of developing heart disease.
The study done on women showed those who averaged fewer than five hours were 39 percent more likely to develop heart disease.
Those who got nine hours or more had a 37 percent higher risk.
The researchers suggest that the right amount of sleep may be nearly as crucial to heart health as eating right and exercising.
