A black male with a fatal gunshot was found in the back seat of a car on 21st Street and Essex Avenue in Roanoke today.
Construction workers at a nearby house noticed the body and called police around noon.
Neighbors say they heard gunshots in the area last night between six and seven.

Nearly four years after she was reported missing and two months afrer her body was found in North Carolina, police have made an arrest in the murder of Patty Jo Pulley.
Her husband, Eugene Ricky Pulley, was arrested late last night at his home near Lebanon, Virginia.

A Roanoke man accused of murder has turned himself in to authorities.

37-year old Darrell Jeffrey Carter was indicted earlier this month, in connection with the death of 27- year old Timothy Smithers in August, 2001.
He is charged with second degree murder.

Smithers body was found in the 1400 block of Patterson Avenue. He died from a blow to the head.
Carter is being held in the Roanoke City Jail without bond.

One person was killed in an accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81.
State Police say around eleven this morning a 32 year old woman from Front Royal was killed when she ran her pick-up truck off the right side of the road near mile marker 175.
The woman overcorrected and veered back into traffic, into the path of a tractor trailer.
She died at the scene, and her name has not been released pending family notification.
Police say NO charges will be filed.

A state trooper was apparently in the wrong place at the wrong time when he was guarding one accident scene.

A video camera caught an S-U-V speeding down the road, and crashing right into the trooper's car.
Authorities say the driver may NOT have been able to see the other vehicles on the side of the road, and then apparently couldn't stop because of the ice.
The S-U-V rolled several times.
The trooper is in fair condition.
