Talk show host Phil Donahue's return to television did not last very long.
After six months of poor ratings, M-S-N-B-C is pulling the plug on his show.
It ends Friday night after failing to recapture the spark that won him nine Emmys from 1970 to 1996. The ratings started low and showed little improvement, even with the addition of a live audience.
The president of M-S-N-B-C says the cable channel is proud of Donahue's show, but disappointed that it was not able to attract viewers.
Donahue was hired to be a liberal counterweight to Fox News Channel's competing ``The O'Reilly Factor,'' which drew over five times as many viewers during the latest sweeps.
