Wachovia Corporation is closing some of its bank branches as part of its merger with First Union. 42-locations across Virginia will shut down by late July. Five in the Western part of the state include two in Harrisonburg and one each in Abingdon, Winchester and Charlottesville. An official says the closings are to avoid overlapping banking operations and involve mostly small branches. The company says bank employees will not be laid off but will be offered positions at other locations.

The train was carrying coal when 32-cars fell off track in the Ellet Valley. Norfolk Southern officials say one of the train's wheels broke sometime after it left Bluefield. No one was hurt. The derailment happened just two weeks after another train derailed in Pulaski County, near the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Operator error caused that accident.
