It's been more than eight months since the Bedford County school board made the controversial decision to renovate rather than build a new Jefferson Forest High School.

Some board members say it's time to move forward, others feel the board needs to slow things down.

At a special meeting tonight, the board voted to approve a 24 point six million dollar budget to pay for renovations to Jefferson Forest High school.
They agreed to move forward with a plan called concept "D"
That would include adding among other things a math and science wing, a band and chorale facility, and relocating the cafeteria to accomodate more people.
Tonight's vote was 6 to 2 with the opposition coming from the two members who represent the Forest district.

Before the project can officially start, the Board of Supervisors must approve the funding and they could do it at its next meeting in May.
But that could be an uphill battle.

Forestry workers are already stretched thin, battling several brush fires across the area.

About 30 acres have burned on Read Mountain in near the Botetourt-Roanoke County line.
The fire is under control at this time. A skeleton crew will be fighting the fire all night and a full crew will return in the morning.

Foresters say a fire on Poor Mountain in Montgomery County only about 20 percent contained.
They fought it with a helicopter but later had to stop because of mechanical problems.
Crews had to hike miles in on foot. Their work was slow-going because of the steep incline and rocky terrain.
Foresters say no homes or other structures are in danger.
A downed power line ignited the fire Wednesday evening.

About 65 acres are burning out of control on Draper Mountain in Pulaski County, and forestry officials expect more than one hundred to be burned by morning.
High winds caused the flames to jump fire lines throughout the day... only 20 percent of the blaze is contained right now. Crews are fighting the blaze from the air and the ground and more have been called in from surrounding departments in the mid-atlantic.

A prescribed burn went out of control in Rockbridge County scorching hundreds of acres.
By this afternoon, hundreds of acres of the wildlife management area near Goshen had burned, and officials say the fire could burn up to eleven-hundred acres before it can be contained.
The fire is on Department of Game and Inland Fisheries land, and no private lands or homes are threatened.

A Botetourt County Marine is among the first members of Operation Iraqi Freedom to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Sergeant Michael Lalush was buried today with standard military honors.
His parents did not want television cameras at the funeral.
Lalush was killed in a helicopter accident in Iraq on March 30th.
He was 23.

Lalush is the seventh person from the war to be buried there.

It was chilly, windy night at the ole ballpark.
But the Lynchburg bats did their best to warm things up. In the top of the second, with the bases loaded, Jeremy Harts cranks a deep fly to center field. It gets to the wall on one hop, allowing three runs to cross the dish. Chris Shelton, Walter Young, and Jose Bautista all score for a 3-nothing Lynchburg lead.
Still in the second, Vic Butler singles to right field scoring Harts from third and it was 4-oh Hillcats.
Then in the 4th, Salem's Trevor Mote bloops a single to shallow center field.

Mote has now hit safely in eleven straight games, but Lynchburg wins tonight by a final of 10 to 2.

In the college ranks yesterday, Virginia Tech dropped both games of a double header with West Virginia, 15-5 and 3-1. But Tech has already won 24 games this season and as Steve Mason explains, the Hokies are well on their way to surpassing last year's total of 33 victories thanks to a young pitching staff.

((With four starting pitchers lost to either the draft or graduation, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year on the hill, but Tech's infant staff is playing like a bunch grown ups. The Hokies have a Big east leading 2.87 ERA, well below last seasons totals. ((:))

Virginia Tech's football season opener against Central Florida will now happen a day later than originally planned. The Tech athletic department announced yesterday that the game has been moved from Saturday, August 30th to Sunday, August 31st. The move was made to accommodate a national television audience for ESPN, which will televise the game at 3 PM.

In one related Big East Football note, in yesterday's New York Daily News, league commissioner Mike Tranghese ripped the ACC as being a bunch of hypocrites for trying to lure Big East members Tech, Miami, Syracuse, and Boston College. Apparently the ACC is interested in forming a 12 member conference for the purpose of a post season college football playoff with a very big payday.

Roanoke officials say a new summer music festival could become a signature event for the city. Today, organizers of Fiddlefest revealed more of their plans to make that happen.

Beginning on Monday, July 21st, Fiddlefest will include concerts at Elmwood Park, activities on the City Market including the world's largest square dance, and a day-long bluegrass jamboree in Victory Stadium.
