James Bryant Hudson admitted to killing Walter Stanley Cole, his brother Thomas Cole and Patsy Cole.

Prosecutors say Hudson had long disagreed with his victims over a private access road. Commonwealth's Attorney John Greenbacker says the judge cited Hudson's lack of remorse in sentencing him to death. Hudson's execution date is scheduled for October.

The fire on Bratton's Mountain near Goshen has burned nearly 500 acres so far, and is expected to scorch up to eleven hundred acres before it is under control. No homes or private lands are threatened, and the fire is contained to land owned by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The blaze started yesterday when forestry workers were executing a prescribed burn that went out of control.

A forestry official says about 40 acres are burning out of control on Draper Mountain. Crews are fighting the blaze from the air and the ground. Firefighters are also digging a line around the fire by hand because most of the terrain is too steep for bulldozers.
Officials say they're not sure what sparked the fire.

Earlier today, they fought it with a helicopter, dropping 100-gallon buckets of water.
They later had to stop because of mechanical problems.

A Marine from Botetourt County was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery today.

Sergeant Michael Lalush was buried with standard military honors.
His parents did not want television cameras at the funeral.
Lalush was killed in a helicopter accident in Iraq on March 30th.
He was 23.

Another Marine and an Air Force Major killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom were also buried in ceremonies at Arlington today.
Lalush is the seventh person from the war to be buried there.

But how does all that gasoline get there? There's an underground pipeline- -more than a thousand miles long- -that brings it here from the Gulf of Mexico. The Plantation Pipeline was being built as the United States entered the Second World War. Today it's a network that feeds jet fuel directly to Dulles and National Airport. A spur from Greensboro to Roanoke was completed in 1964. It dead ends just off Starkey Road. Though it's entirely below ground, the line is well marked. Nonetheless, we had to really search for someone who knew about the Pipeline.

The season opening tilt against Central Florida has been moved from Saturday, August 30th to Sunday, August 31st. The move was made to accomodate a national television audience for ESPN, which will televise the game at 3 PM.

Sticking with baseball, after losing their opener in the Dixie Conference Tournament yesterday, the Ferrum Panthers bounced back today by beating Greensboro 11-2, and will now play Friday morning at 10 against the Methodist-Christopher Newport loser. [TAKE ODAC Graphic]
