Christiansburg police officer Scott Allen Hylton was shot and killed today in the line of duty. It happened this morning at the Shell gas station off Interstate-81, near the Christiansburg exit.

New River Valley Bureau Chief Myranda Stephens joins us now with the details. Jean, authorities say it all began around 5:30 this morning, when Officer Hylton spotted a shoplifting suspect at the gas station. That's when witnesses say things got ugly.

He says he tried to go over and help, when Holmes turned the gun on him.

Officers say they then chased Holmes into the McDonald's parking lot next door and opened fire. Holmes was later pronounced dead at the Montgomery Regional Hospital.

Jean, the Virginia State police is now investigating the shooting. Now, there was a Montgomery County Sheriff's deputy who was also shot, Eric Sutphin, who was treated and released , and we're told is doing okay tonight.

A door on a plane burst open in flight sucking passengers out of the plane- although there are conflicting reports on how may people may have been killed.

The Russian made plane like this was 33 thousand feet in the air over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The aircraft's cargo door burst open- and passengers were sucked out.
A Congo government official confirms seven people died, but others say the number of dead is much higher- as many as 129 people may have been killed.
The plane was privately chartered carrying 200 police officers and their families.
Nine survivors are being treated for trauma and minor injuires.
One doctor says survivors told him they were hanging on desperately to the inside of the plane as luggage swirled about and battered them.

Another Black Hawk helicopter has gone down in Iraq, and Pentagon officials say three U-S soldiers were killed.
Officials are calling this a crash since they believe it was an accident and not the result of hostile fire.
The helicopter is said to have gone into the Tigris River in northern Iraq.
The Black Hawk normally carries a crew of four. Officials say the fourth soldier on the helicopter was injured.
