A late afternoon rain quickly turned to a storm today, causing some local streets to flood.

Roanoke was rain-soaked in no time.
Three inches of rain fell in one hour ... flooding roads and stranding motorists and school children.

Marya Jones went out to take a look at the damage.

Drains backed up, roads got flooded and people got trapped.
Some school children were held in their schools for an hour or more until administrators deemed it safe for them to go home.
But luckily, no one got hurt.

(( The rains started pelting downtown Roanoke at about 2:00.
Storm drains just couldn't keep up.
A river ran through Campbell Avenue.
These men ran out to move their car ... but it was already submerged in water.
Even after the rains stopped, it took a tow truck to finish the job.
Downtown, lightning struck a building.
Firefighters say it did some damage to the roof at the Metro restaurant.
Down the street at Center in the Square, volunteers worked quickly, stacking sandbags to keep the water from flowing in.
After it all passed, the basements and ground floors were flooded and the task of cleanup was just beginning.))

The storm took out power in parts of the region.
AEP says that 700 customers are without power in the Roanoke area.

In the New River Valley there are 5-thousand customers in the dark.

They're calling it a big economic shot in the arm for central Virginia.. one of the area's largest employers says it's ready to expand again.

Over the next three years, Framatome Advanced Nuclear Power will invest 32 million dollars to expand its Lynchburg headquarters and its plant in Campbell County.
The move will create about 300 high-paying jobs for the area.
