Residents of Virgilina have been fighting for more than a year to keep the school open.
In January of 2002, the school board agreed to allow residents the opportunity to raise enrollment to 120 students for the upcoming school year.
There are currently 101 students at the school and residents claim they have 124 students pre-registered for next year.
But tonight, the school board disqualified some of those pre-registerants and the school that has the highest SOL scores in the county will close at the end of the school year.
School administrators say the decision came down to enrollment as well as a belief that the building needed major renovations.

The students will attend either attend South of Dan or Cluster Springs schools next year.
They are both located on the same campus about 10 to 12 miles away from Virgilina.
Some parents fear their kids will be on the bus for more than a hour and half each way.
