Officials with Medeco High Security Locks, a company based out of Salem, teamed up with the New York Giants to help Habitat for Humanity build homes in the South Bronx. 17 current and former members of the Giants helped out, including Harry Carsons, Jim Burt, and Carl Banks; and former U-V-A fullback Charles Way. 30 Medeco employees also helped build one family a new home, something the company's president says just makes sense.

Two supermax prisons that were unveiled in Virginia five years ago, have now had their capacity cut by more than 75 percent.

[SUPER=03-Wise Co./September 2001;]

The most recent cutback was earlier this year at Red Onion State Prison in Wise County, where fewer than half of the original 12-hundred beds remain designated for the most violent inmates. Wallens Ridge State Prison was downgraded last year to a maximum-security prison. Critics say the changes prove that Virginia grossly overestimated its number of violent and predatory inmates, when it spent nearly 150 million dollars on the prisons. The Virginia Department of Corrections says the reductions are just a result of a change in the way the department classifies inmates.
