A Roanoke man pled guilty today to shooting a Florida tourist outside a city motel in March.

Derrick Wakie Smith pled guilty to eight counts including attempted capital murder, attempted robbery, car jacking, abduction, and multiple firearm charges.
It was on the night of March 27th that Ryan Taboada (Tah--BOH-duh) and his family were about to check into the Holiday Inn Express on Gainsboro Road.
Smith shot Taboada after he refused to give him money and then took off in the family's SUV with a three year old girl strapped in the backseat.
The victim is now recovering at his home in Florida.

Investigators say 38- year- old Joseph Edison Bridges was waiting for his sister and her common- law husband Howell Scott when they returned home.

They say Bridges drove his pickup next to Howell Scott's mini- van, shot him once in the head and drove away. Sheriff Quint Overton says Bridges later called his office and said he'd turn himself in if the sheriff personally picked him up. Bridges is being held at the Franklin County jail and is charged with first degree murder.

The Homeland Security Department today dropped the status to signal an ``elevated'' risk of attack. The Bush administration had put the alert at orange ten days ago, after terror attacks in Saudi Arabia and There was also concern that attacks could take place over the Memorial Day weekend. But the government now says there's been a drop in intelligence pointing to an imminent attack. Orange and yellow are the only levels on the scale that have been used since the color-coded system was adopted more than a year ago.

Project director, Rick Smith says that's why the company's taking every necessary step to make sure that doesn't happen.

In the boy's region C soccer championship tonight Radford took on the George Wythe Maroons on the neutral field at Glenvar high school.

Rain delayed the Region Three Softball Tournament by a day, but the skies were clear for this evening's action at the Moyer Complex.

Northside battled the Lancers from Amherst in one semifinal.
The Lancers wasted no time in getting on the board in the top of the first. Megan Chenault rips a shot to deep left field that bounces off the fence. Lindsey Ware and Tisha Scruggs crossed the dish for a 2-nothing Amherst lead.
It was 3-1 in the 5th when the Vikes Nancy Furhman smacks a deep shot of her own to left. Then check out the slide into third base. Northside had 8 hits on the day, but came up with only the one run. Amherst held on to win 3-1 advancing to the state tournament and the regional final.

In the other semifinal, Jefferson Forest pitcher Allison Carter shut down the Rustburg Red Devils. Carter threw a shutout and the Cavaliers moved into the state tournament with a 3-nothing win.

Forest won the title game over Amherst 5-to-nothing. James River won the Region C title tonight beating Glenvar in the semi-finals and PH Glade Spring in the finals. Angela Tincher tossed another no-hitter. Her 9th this year.

The Virginia Cavaliers officially broke ground on the new special events center that will replace University Hall today.

The Board of Visitors also announced that the facility will be known as the John Paul Jones arena. The namesake's son, Paul Tudor Jones donated $35 million dollars to this project and in return he gets to name it in his dad's honor. John Paul Jones graduated from UVa's law school in 1948, his son is a 1976 grad.

It turns out it was a good thing those sticks kept breaking. The snake was a non poisonous Black Rat Snake, one of the longest found in the U-S, but not dangerous. Luna had to call in wildlife control to tackle the problem, and the snake was carried off to safety.
