Health officials in Franklin County have issued a warning to anyone swimming at the upper Blackwater River section of Smith Mountain Lake. Recent water samples taken near Ponderosa Campground had more bacteria than allowed by recreational water quality standards. That means anyone swimming in the area is more likely to become ill with stomach, respiratory, or skin infections. The elevated levels only appeared in the upper Blackwater River section, and are likely the result of heavy rainfall washing surface contaminants into the water.
