Sheriff's deputies say a Botetourt County couple's murder-suicide apparently stems from troubles with the law.
A passing motorist found the bodies of 53-year-old Chester Spangler Junior and his 53-year-old wife, Carolyn Daniel Spangler, last night in a church parking lot.
The sheriff says Chester Spangler apparently shot his wife and himself and left behind a note.
There were no signs of struggle.
Spangler had been indicted earlier this month by a grand jury on charges of grand larceny, possession of stolen property and forgery.
The sheriff says the couple apparently did NOT attend Pierce Chapel United Methodist Church, where their bodies were found.

The American gunfire killed two protestors. They were among a group of former Iraqi soldiers seeking jobs and back pay outside the compound that now serves as the U-S- led administration's headquarters.
The U-S army says one demonstrator had pulled out a weapon and started shooting -- and that's when the U-S troops responded.

(( Thomas O'Brien, the bishop of Phoenix, is quickly replacing other church leaders as the symbol of the Catholic Church's current crisis. But unlike many of the pedophile priests he admits protecting over the years, O'Brien is facing jail time...charged with leaving the scene of a fatal hit and run.
O'Brien's car struck Jim Reed late Saturday night. Witnesses followed the car and gave police a license plate number. The Bishop told police he might have hit something that night. He never reported it...and once he learned investigators were looking for his car he apparently tried to have the damaged vehicle fixed.

(SOT/Romley) HE WILL BE TREATED NO DIFFERENTLY THAN ANYONE ELSE.

Just a few weeks ago, Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley forced the Bishop to admit he protected predator priests...and give the county sweeping oversight of the dioceses' anti-abuse efforts. Now his office will prosecute the hit and run case.

(SOT/Romley) It's unfortunate it is the bishop but I will do my job

irregardless that it is the bishop.

(SOT/ROY) A MAN WAS KILLED AND HE DIDN'T EVEN STOP TO GIVE HIM THE LAST

RITES.
Sharon Roy says she was raped and had a daughter by this priest who has fled to Ireland-- a priest O'Brien protected. She and other victims of predator priests in the Phoenix diocese say they see a pattern.

(SOT/ROY/SOMETHING LIKE:) HE COVERS UP, HE HIDES THE TRUTH, HE RUNS

AWAY. THAT'S WHAT HE DID BEFORE AND THAT'S WHAT HE'S DOING WITH THIS ACCIDENT-- BUT NOW A MAN IS DEAD.
STANDUP: The district attorney here says his investigators are going to try to reconstruct the hours preceding the accident... trying to determine if drugs or alcohol played a part... and leaving open the possibility of additional charges against Bishop O'Brien.
