The cost of higher education may be going up in Virginia, but state funding is not.

The General Assembly's goal is for the state to cover half of the estimated student need. A report released yesterday found that financial aid money for the budget year that starts at the beginning of next month will only cover about 36-percent of the demand. The study also found that the average cost at a four year school for undergraduates will be nearly eleven-thousand dollars for the upcoming year.

The Pittsylvania County school board is looking into whether student athletes should be held to a tougher academic standard.

Currently, the county requires student athletes to pass three classes the previous semester in order to be on a team.
One school board member is proposing that students now be required to pass all four subjects.
The students would also have to have fewer than two behavioral office referrals.
But the majority of people who spoke at a forum last night believe changing the rules would do more harm than good.
