The bird was found in the Starkey Road area last Wednesday. The states lab in Richomnd confirmed today that the bird had west nile.
It is the first bird to test positive in the Roanoke area this year.
According to the health district director, people should take precautions.

Ways to reduce exposure include wearing long, loose and light-colored clothing, using insect repellent, cleaning out birdbaths weekly, and eliminating any standing water around your home which could be a breeding ground.
That water could be in flower pots, toys or old tires.
West nile is spread to birds, humans and horses through the bite of an infected mosquito.
