Thirty-five riders were involved in the pileup that started when Spain's Jose Enrique Guiterrez slipped and went down in a sprint just a few hundred yards from the finish. Five riders were taken to a hospital for x-rays including US rider Tyler Hamilton, who has a broken collarbone and is doubtful for the rest of the Tour. Armstrong's bike had a flat, so he finished the race on the one of teammate Jose Luis Rubiera. He is 8th in the overall standings. Bradley McGee is the leader while Italy's Alessandro Pitacchi won the stage.
