Someone saw smoke coming from the back of Garden City Elementary in Roanoke.

They called the fire department around 8:45 tonight.
Firefighters found a small blaze inside a classroom and quickly put it out.
Investigators say it looks like arson. They believe someone got in through a first-floor window and set fire to a pile of cloth and leaves.
They're not yet sure if the window was already open, or if the firebug forced it open.
The fire didn't cause much damage.

Tonight the Franklin County Board of Supervisors heard from some of those residents. It also heard from A-E-P.
A company representative was on hand to brief the supervisors on the shoreline plan which was released to the public July third.
Right now, the plan is only a draft and A-E-P says it's open to suggestions from the public until August 15th.
Two public meetings are also scheduled next week for A-E-P to answer questions and take comments.
But some residents and even one supervisor at tonight's meeting say more time is needed.

Rescue crews have again called off the search for a missing fisherman.

Officials believe 78-year old Graham Smith drowned yesterday in the Maury River near Lexington.
A fisherman for more than 40 years, Graham was with his brother Marshall in knee-deep water.
As the water rose, Marshall turned around and his brother was gone.
Crews were out all day today with no success.
No more large-scale searches are planned, but officials say they'll keep checking the area to see if anything turns up.

Authorities in West Virginia may be getting some help from NASA to help find a man who sexually assaulted a girl at a Target store.

This grainy videotape shows the man leading the girl by her wrist to a secluded part of the South Charleston store.
The man told the 11 year old he was a security guard and then allegedly assaulted her at knifepoint.
NASA will offer high tech help to enhance the videotape and possibly help solve the case- something the space agency has done in other criminal cases.
So far the original tape has prompted more than 100 phone tips.

The children, all between eight and 15 years old, were on the way to a school rafting trip when the accident happened.

A Pulaski County judge has thrown out the case against a man charged in connection with the death of a local teenager.

33-year-old Edward Lee Carter was charged with distributing drugs to a minor, after he sold an eighth of an ounce of cocaine last May to 16-year-old Gaelen (GAY-len) Woods.
Woods later died of an overdose.
Carter's trial got underway yesterday, but today the judge dismissed the case, saying there was NOT enough evidence against him to go ahead with the trial.

One of the NFL's pioneers died today at the age of 83.
Tex Schramm, the former president and general manager of the Cowboys
passed away this morning at his Dallas home.
Schramm hired Tom Landry to be the Cowboys' first coach.
He also was responsible for instant replay, sideline radios for the quarterback's helmets, and for something as simple as putting the flag on top of the goal posts.
He was elected to the hall of fame in 1991.

The protesters were gathered in support of jailed farmer Jose Bove who last month destroyed genetically modified crops and served about six weeks in jail in 2002 for ransacking a McDonald's restaurant construction site.
They slowed Lance down as he finished more than 20 minutes behind the stage winner. He still stayed in first place because the other top riders also were caught in the traffic jam.
Tomorrow the Tour is off. Friday is a 95 mile ride.
