Numbers being released today show highway traffic deaths reached their highest level in a dozen years in 2002, yet the number of injuries fell.
Nearly 43- thousand people died on the nation's highways.
Officials say safer vehicles and more people wearing safety belts could be the reason for the lower injury rate.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says about 75- percent of drivers and passengers are buckling up.
