Southside employees are increasingly wondering when or even if they will even return to the Pillowtex Corporation. The towel manufacturer missed a quarterly loan payment to its banks last month. It now has until Thursday to repay the loan, but employees at the company's Henry County plant fear the company won't be able to pull through.

The auction system that was a mainstay of the tobacco business for decades is quickly fading away. Two major cigarette companies say they won't take part at all this year in the traditional flue-cured tobacco auctions.

Philip Morris U-S-A and R-J Reynolds Tobacco company will be buying all of their tobacco through direct contracts with farmers. Contracting by Philip Morris was started three years ago and has taken over much of the tobacco sales across the flue-cured belt in the southeastern United States. Two other companies -- Brown and Williamson, and Lorillard Tobacco -- say they will buy some tobacco at auction as well as through contracts. Right now, only some 20- percent of the flue-cured crop will be sold at auction.
